What is the difference between a chronological and a functional CV?

In the German market, the chronological (tabular) CV is standard — most recent position first, in reverse chronological order. The functional CV (organised by competencies) is uncommon in the DACH region and can raise suspicion. Exception: A strong career change, where transferable skills should take centre stage.
