German Application Standards

The German application process follows unwritten rules. These six points determine whether your CV gets read at all.

Application photo — expected

In Germany, a professional photo belongs in the top-right corner of your CV. No photo is not a blocker — but it stands out. A neat, neutral portrait signals care and professionalism.

Reverse-chronological CV

Anti-chronological, gap-free, no decorative borders. Every position needs a date range, company, title — and concrete achievements as bullet points. Skills lists alone are not enough.

DIN 5008 — the invisible grid

Margins, font size, spacing: German HR managers spot deviations immediately. DIN 5008 is the industry standard for business documents — and that includes job applications.

ATS compatibility

Applicant tracking systems read your CV before any human does. Tables, graphics, and multi-column layouts block parsing. Text must be linear and machine-readable.

Cover letter — tone and length

One DIN-A4 page, formal salutation, specific reference to the role. No generic motivation letter. German employers expect you to explain precisely why this particular position.
