How to Build Your CV —
Structure, Length, Content

Your CV is the first thing recruiters read — and the first thing ATS systems scan. Here's what really matters.

The CV: first document, strongest filter

A compelling CV in 2026 is a maximum of two pages long, structured in reverse-chronological order, and formatted for ATS compatibility — meaning a single-column layout, standard fonts, and keywords from the job posting. Recruiters decide within seconds based on the CV whether they'll keep reading.

That means: your CV must not only be strong in content, but immediately readable, clearly structured, and ATS-compatible. Anyone who cuts corners here loses the first round — before the content even gets evaluated.

"A good CV doesn't tell your story — it enables the reader to discover it themselves. At their own pace, in their own order."

Structure: the right order

The standard structure of a German CV (Lebenslauf) isn't random — it follows what recruiters expect and what ATS systems can process. In our application packages, we optimise this structure specifically for your target role.

1
Personal Details
Name, address, phone, email, LinkedIn (photo optional). Date of birth is not legally required in Germany, but is often expected.
2
Work Experience
Reverse chronological order (most recent position first). For each role: title, company, timeframe, 2–4 bullet points with specific tasks/results.
3
Education
Also in reverse chronological order. Degree, institution, timeframe. For recent graduates, education can be placed at position 2.
4
Skills & Expertise
Languages (with proficiency level), IT skills, specialist knowledge. Only what you can actually back up — no empty self-assessments without context.
5
Further Training
Certificates, courses, training — only if relevant to the role. Not a mandatory section.
6
Volunteering / Interests
Optional. Only if it demonstrates something meaningful — volunteering in a leadership role, relevant engagement. No phrases like "reading and travelling".

Length: less is almost always more

1
Page
For career starters and graduates with limited experience. Clear focus required.
2
Pages — Standard
Ideal for 3–15 years of work experience. Considered the norm in the German market.
3+
Pages
Only for very experienced executives or academic positions. Otherwise, trim it down.

The most common mistakes — and what they cost you

Many of these mistakes can be spotted instantly with a free ATS check. The good news: most are easy to fix once you know what to look for.

✓ What works
  • Reverse chronological, clearly dated
  • Concrete results instead of task lists
  • Single-column, ATS-compatible layout
  • Keywords from the job posting
  • Standard fonts, clear hierarchy
  • Gaps explained (briefly, factually)
✗ What hurts
  • Creative templates with 2 columns + icons
  • "I was responsible for..." instead of results
  • Skill bars without a scale or reference
  • Unexplained gaps
  • Outdated information (school, internships from 15 years ago)
  • Photo as a selfie or poor image quality

Writing bullet points right: achievement, not duty

The most common content mistake: bullet points describe what someone did — not what came out of it. The difference is decisive. Even AI tools can only help here if the right context is provided.

Before / After

From duty to achievement

  • Weak: "Responsible for B2B customer support"
  • Strong: "Managed 40 B2B accounts, increased customer satisfaction from 78% to 94%"
  • Weak: "Involved in the implementation of a new CRM system"
  • Strong: "Co-led CRM rollout for 120 users, completed 3 weeks ahead of deadline"
Core principle

Your CV is not a record of your past — it's an argument for your future in this role.

We optimise your CV — for the specific role

Not by template. But through analysis of the role, ATS requirements, and your profile. Your CV is just one part of the complete application — we take care of everything.
